The Australian mining community of Cobar is being vigilant in its drive to continue to thrive once its gold resources imminently run out.
Located over 700 kilometres north-west of Sydney, Cobar, which also mines copper, lead, silver and zinc, is set to finish in the next ten to 15 years.
However, the area is displaying a proactive approach to securing its economic future, with the Peak Gold Mine sponsoring a visit this week from economic development expert Ernesto Sirolli.
Mr Sirolli, who has a history of preparing communities for the loss of a major resource, having supported the loss of the tuna fishing community in Esperance, Western Australia, said it was important "to start to look at your economy when you're still ok".
The environmental adviser at the Peak Gold Mine, Dennis Wilson, said the community was looking to "make hay while the sun shines" as well as to start developing for Cobar's economic security.
